Pia Bouman School for Ballet and Creative Movement
COMMITMENT TO EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVITY
The School’s mandate that was verbalized in 1987 acknowledges the right for:
Every child who wishes to learn dance, every child who wishes to create dance, every child who wishes to perform dance should be given the chance to do so…
Today, this means that while preserving the integrity of our art form, we must actively work to erase the boundaries and inequities that classical ballet as a western art form historically fostered while maintaining responsible artistic standards.
Pia Bouman School has a 45-year history of dance learning, creating and performing in Toronto. We recognize and support in word and action the importance of diversity of representation, of ability and of cultural heritage.
We The School, our partners and our community pledge,
to revere this land and the many cultures that lie at its core
to revere the diverse racial and cultural backgrounds of Canada today
to show reverence for creed, sex, gender identity and gender expression,
sexual orientation, age, marital and family status, and ability and disability
to approach our efforts with authenticity, transparency and respect
to recognize the diverse cultures that enrich our dance lives
to uphold our philosophy and mandate that protects and
celebrates this diversity, by making this policy public knowledge.
For the Board of Directors,
